Under The Piano

I wrote the lyrics to

this song

over a year ago. I have worked on it more over the summer and it has come together in a way I love. It is about my memories with a dear friend I had in college and how he believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. It gives me courage to do hard things.

For me this song represents finding others who believe in us. Like Dumbo and his magic feather, others can help us to try out our wings. Though they may be rusty and stiff, they are still there ready to be used. Look for others who believe in us. They don’t have to be there right now. They may be distant, a mere memory, or they may have passed on – but look and remember to find a shining star that helps you once again believe that you can do it. Our memories can be powerful vehicles, always before us urging us on. We only have a finite amount of time but all our experiences and memories can add to our belief in ourselves if we truly believe in their wonder. They are powerful tools God uses to help us remember who we truly are and to help us move forward in faith. Others help us see better who we are. Our memories can guide and remind us how much we are loved even if we don’t feel it right then – we can remember. A beautiful thing!

This song has been a gift. Something I have struggled with, but also one where love lives and feels like home. It gives me courage and conviction to not be afraid. Because of it I have a better understanding of who I am and where I belong in the world.

Lyrics

Under the piano

Hands behind your head

Smile upon your face

Hearing every not I played

That is where I see you

Whenever I look back

You were there and you cared

You don't know what that meant to me

You will always be in my memory

First summer away from home

I was a little scared

Out for new adventures

I had life by the tail

That is where I met you

With a smile upon your face

Then I knew I found home away from home with you

You were an artist and showed me your art

You asked to hear me play

what was dear to my heart

So we went and I played

So happy that you stayed

We had hope in what was and in what was to be

Under the piano

Hands behind your head

Smile upon your face

Hearing every not I played

That is where I see you

Whenever I look back

You were there and you cared

You don't know what that meant to me

You will always be in my memory

We were free and we believed

That hope stays with me

So when I feel in darkness

Trying hard to hold on

Want to find the answers

They come slowly if at all

Yet I still see you

Smiling under there

As if to say

"I'm still here  I'll always be your friend"

So under the piano

A supporting hand

Might not always see you

But you never left

Though our ways are parted

By time and circumstance

You are there

And you care

You don't know what that means to me

You will always be in my memory

Didn't know back then

How I'd miss you my friend

I will carry you

I will carry you in my memory
