Enjoy Your Children

This poem was inspired by a book I recently read titled

The Way With Children by Shayne Gallagher.

It is amazing and I highly recommend it! There was a poem he wrote titled Enjoy. I was thinking about this idea and thought I would write my own.

Enjoy Your Children

Enjoy your children

Not as a guilt trip but as a song

A hidden world waiting to be discovered

But there all along

They see the joy

The gifts

The life

Of love that lifts and sings

Enjoy your children

The wise woman says

They won’t be small for long

They see the good

The present

The now

That awakens and renews

Observe the wonder and awe in their eyes

They are your teachers

Reminderers of a true self

Be their student

Don’t wait to learn

Of pixie dust and pirates

Toadstools and such

Empty your plate

Dare to see

Set down the must

Be open and trust

The gifts of life

Come to those willing to see

Not through lofty ladders of riches and esteem

But through the small, simple, humble

Children of this world.

From wonder to wonder

You hold the world

When you hold your child’s hand.

Enjoy it!

After I wrote this I decided we needed some time together and headed to the park for a picnic. I love to hear my daughter laugh when I swing her on the swings. Just magic. I am grateful for my teachers. They might look small, but understand so much.
